Day of Surgery

  • Please arrive at least 1 hour prior to your designated surgery time, unless your physician has given you a specific report time.
  • Bring a picture ID with your current address and an insurance card with you to your appointment.
  • Please bring your insurance card to the Surgery Center even if you are a self-pay patient. Your insurance card will be needed if specimens are to be sent to the lab.
  • Please bring your completed pre-operative paper work with you to surgery.

  • You will be asked to remove your glasses or contact lenses. Please bring an appropriate case.
  • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. Leave valuables such as jewelry and large amounts of cash at home
  • All piercings must be removed prior to surgery.
  • Do not eat or drink anything, including water, breath mints, hard candy or chewing gum, after midnight on the day of your procedure, unless instructed differently by your physician or anthesia provider.
  • Do not take oral hypoglycemics and/or diuretics the morning of surgery. All other blood pressure, cardiac and respiratory medications should be taken per your normal routine the morning of surgery with a sip of water. Call your family physician fowww.surgerycenterofpotomac.comoagulant therapy.
  • Discontinue use of all herbal products two weeks prior to your surgery.
  • You may brush your teeth but be careful not to swallow the water.
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you the first night following your surgery if you are scheduled for general anesthesia or sedation. If you are from out of town, you will need to spend the night in the Metropolitan area.
You will be moved to our post-anesthesia care unit where you will remain under close observation by anesthesiology and nurses until you are ready to go home. Although the length of time varies according to your procedure and the surgeons’ orders, most patients are discharged 1-2 hours after their procedure. Please let the nurse know if you need any medications, assistance or have special concerns.

Patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The patient/guardian must remain in the building during the surgery.

After Your Surgery Or Procedure

You may feel a bit groggy, light-headed, dizzy, sore and sometimes slightly nauseated. Each person responds differently to surgery and/or anesthesia.

Written instructions will be given to you before leaving the Surgery Center of Potomac. Be sure to contact your physician if you have any questions. For a list of our standard post-operative discharge instructions, click here.

Once it has been determined that it is all right for you to leave, you may do so at any time. If you wish to remain longer, discuss this with your nurse. It is recommended that you leave before the effects of the pain control medications wear off. This will minimize the pain during the trip home and allow you to rest more comfortably once you return home.

We will call you the day after surgery to check on you. If you have any questions or concerns contact your doctor or call 911.

If you feel you have an emergency, contact your physician immediately or go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital.
